About Student Representative Shannon Peterson

Shannon Peterson, BSN, RN, SRNA

Shannon is a first-generation Filipino American and a second-year SRNA attending Mary Baldwin University in Virginia. Her parents immigrated from the Philippines to the US in the 1980s and settled in Southeast Alaska, where she was born and raised. Shannon received her BSN from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2015. She worked as a staff nurse in the ER and ICU for the first three years and an ICU travel nurse for four years.

Shannon has a strong passion for advocating for the underrepresented population. Having cared for underrepresented populations in Alaska and California, as well as caring for her parents when they grew ill, she realized the need for better patient advocacy and healthcare provider diversity. She believes having more diverse advanced practitioners allows for a greater connection with patients and better pathways to health.

Shannon serves as a Student Representative of the Virginia Association of Nurse Anesthetists’ (VANA) – Government Relations Committee to further understand the intricacies of communication to participate at the state level.

Her doctoral project focuses on creating an educational module for CRNAs/SRNAs and providing a case review on the administration of cryoanalgesia before patients undergo total knee arthroplasty.
